New Zealand truck road code study guide
Study shared road rules alongside heavy-vehicle topics. Read each question for its vehicle class and operating conditions before choosing an answer.
Truck questions use English first; translations are study references.
What to focus on
- Stopping space and blind spots
- Loading and vehicle stability
- Vehicle classes and licence knowledge
A practical way to study
- Check the official licence classes for the vehicle you intend to drive. The everyday word “truck” does not by itself identify the licence you need.
- Study stopping distance, blind spots, loading and stability. Work through each situation using the vehicle’s size and load, alongside the heavy vehicle road code.
- Read the English question first and use a translation to clarify unfamiliar wording. Review truck mistakes before trying a mock test, and check unclear terms in the official guidance.
Common questions
Which heavy vehicle licence class should I study for?
Use NZTA’s vehicle and licence class definitions, including vehicle type and weight, to identify the relevant class. The truck study section does not decide your eligibility for a licence.
Why are truck questions shown in English first?
The truck section keeps the English question first, with other languages as study references. Use a translation to understand the situation, then return to the English wording and confirm important terms in the official road code.
Can a car licence be used to drive any truck?
Do not rely on the vehicle’s name or appearance. What you may drive depends on the vehicle and the class and conditions of your licence; check NZTA’s current class definitions before driving.
